Introducing the Emotional Weather Report
 
At Grow Therapy Services, we believe that each child’s strengths and interests are the key to unlocking their potential.
 
This week, we worked with *Kiana*, an 11-year-old with a deep passion for the weather. *Kiana* has found it difficult to express her emotions accurately in the past. Using tools like the Zones of Regulation, she often felt pressured to say she was in the “right” zone to meet others’ expectations, even if that didn’t match how she was truly feeling.
To support *Kiana* in identifying and expressing her emotions authentically, we created the Emotional Weather Report!
 
This tool connects different types of weather (e.g., sunny, stormy, foggy) to physical body clues and feelings, helping *Kiana* recognise and express her emotional states without the pressure of labeling abstract emotions.
 
For example:
Sunny = Feeling positive, energetic, and content.
Stormy = Overwhelmed, with intense emotions.
Foggy = Confused or experiencing unclear thoughts.
By linking emotions to something she’s naturally curious about, we’ve created a safe, fun, and engaging way for *Kiana* to check in with herself.
 
The Emotional Weather Report is now a valuable tool for her to share how she’s feeling, process transitions, and develop self-regulation skills in a way that feels meaningful and authentic.

Why Neuroaffirming Practices Matter:
Neuroaffirming therapy is about meeting individuals where they are, celebrating their unique traits, and recognising that all behaviour is a form of communication. By avoiding rigid labels or expectations, we empower children to understand their inner world in a way that feels safe and validating.
 
Incorporating strengths and interests into therapy sessions not only boosts engagement but also fosters deeper connections and learning. It builds confidence, encourages self-expression, and creates tools that truly resonate with the child’s perspective.
